DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines officials are set to discuss a proposal to open up more areas for fishing along the city's Principal Riverwalk.

A public meeting will be held Tuesday evening on the proposal.

The discussion follows the city's recent proposals to restrict fishing along the Des Moines River downtown. The latest proposal bans fishing at the pedestrian bridge, riverwalk sidewalks and the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway Bridge. It would allow fishing on the riverbank and most other bridges.

Bill Bright says he's been fishing downtown for 30 years and is opposed to the restrictions.

City officials have said the restrictions are necessary for the safety of people using the riverwalk and because anglers aren't cleaning up after themselves.
