The actual playoff agenda won’t change for high school football in the state of Iowa in 2018, but how some teams qualify for the playoffs is changing.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association says it will stick with 16 teams per class. In doing so, the Association deiced not to try a recommendation from the Iowa Football Coaches association and playoff football advisory board. Those suggestions were to expand the field to 32 teams in most classes after a nine game regular season.

When it comes to the formula for decided which teams qualify, the 17 point district tiebreaker is out a  Ratings Percentage Formula, or RPI, much like what some NCAA sports utilize. The option to play out of state foes in bordering states will also be allowed.
