A northeast Iowa sailor will receive a posthumous combat medal on the 76th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day.
The U.S. navy will present the Silver Star to a family member of Father Aloysius H. Schmitt, who was a Chaplin Lieutenant Junior Grade. The Navy says Schmitt helped shipmates escape through a small portal to safety as the USS Oklahoma was sinking during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.
