Nearly 230 inmates in the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville have been relocated to temporary housing after the heat in their unit went out.

The prison issued a news release Wednesday saying that 227 inmates were evacuated from a living unit on Saturday and relocated within the prison.

Officials say the prisoners were moved after a leak in a geothermal heat system left their housing unit without heat.

The low temperature in the area on Saturday was about 25 degrees.

Prison officials say repairs are expected to be complete by Friday and that visitation with relocated prisoners has not been affected.
