On Friday night into Saturday morning there was a pop-up storm that blew through Marshalltown out of nowhere bringing brief heavy rain and strong winds. The peak wind gust during the storm was 53 miles-per-hour. There were power outages affecting Alliant Energy customers in Marshall, Tama, Jasper, and Hardin Counties. Tree branches and limbs were downed, road signs were blown over, and at least one awning along Main Street in downtown Marshalltown suffered damage. The storm brought a temporary halt to the heat wave as the temperature dropped from 79 down to 67. Friday`s high temperature in Marshalltown was 94, after a high on Thursday of 93. Saturday`s high was anticipated as being 95 and Sunday`s at 92. The Marshalltown Parks and Recreation Department listed its attendance on Thursday at the Aquatic Center as 592, a brisk business for a facility that has had attendance problems in recent years. On Thursday and Friday the Marshalltown Senior Center opened its doors as a cooling center, and the Salvation Army did the same thing on Friday and Saturday. Experts cautioned against leaving children and pets in vehicles for any length of time on an unattended basis.
