(Polk County, Iowa) – The Iowa DNR is calling Polk County’s Bow Hunting Program a huge success. Officials say the estimated deer population has dropped dramatically since the program began in 1996. The latest estimate from 2014 showed 12 deer per square mile in Des Moines Water Works Park compared to 53 deer back in 1998. Experts say an over population of deer can lead to the destruction of forest vegetation.
