The Des Moines Blaze amateur football team won their season opener Saturday night against the Minnesota Brawlers a team from Mankato 38-6. Former Des Moines East Quarterback Demareo Darrah threw for four touchdown passes, Kevonn Bernstine rushed for a touchdown and Adel native Brent Tisl kicked a field goal. The team got a defensive safety in the first quarter to go up 2-0, then Minnesota scored on a touchdown pass from Ray Bibbens to Levi Fossen to go up 6-2. The Blaze countered with 36 unanswered points. Jack Norgaard caught two of Darrahs touchdown throws, Keonte White and alumnus of Grand View also caught one and receiver Gunner Wyatt the other. Jordan Smith recorded two sacks on defense. Des Moines will host the Saint Paul Pioneers Saturday night at Duke Williams Stadium on the campus of Des Moines East High School in the Capital City Classic this Saturday night at seven p-m. The game marked the coaching debut of Tom Mahalalovich. The team competes in the Midwest Football Alliance. The game was played at the Spring Creek Sports Athletic Complex at Altoona.
